About Us
Introduction
M-Biotech was
founded in 1997 and is located in Salt Lake City, Utah. M-Biotech's core
business includes the research and development of biosensors for health
care applications. Based on M-Biotech's proprietary hydrogel technology,
M-Biotech focuses specifically on the development of glucose biosensors
for continuous monitoring of glucose levels in diabetic patients.
Market For Glucose Biosensors
According to a recent U.S. News and World Reports'
article, 16 million Americans currently suffer from diabetes, and the incidence
of diabetes is growing faster than ever before. Diabetes is a serious
medical condition that requires regular monitoring for blood glucose
levels to prevent complications such as blindness, kidney failure, nerve
degeneration and even death. Blood glucose self-testing devices are the
fastest growing segment of the medical diagnostics market.
The global market for glucose monitoring products
(mainly fingerstick devices) was approximately $3 billion in 2000 and is
projected to have an annual growth rate of 12-18%. There is an enormous
market opportunity for the company that develops a reliable, accurate,
noninvasive or minimally invasive device for continuously monitoring
blood glucose levels. According to Medical Data international, Inc., most
diabetics are expected to switch to such a device when it becomes
available. Also since currently, only 18% of those diagnosed with
diabetes monitor their blood glucose levels regularly, the potential
market is much larger than just the current fingerstick device using
patients, who are expected to switch to new advanced devices.
